THE PROJECT

Hillcrest Christian College, in Queensland, embarked on a significant expansion involving a new multi-level arts and classroom facility. Built into sub-level terrain, the project faced a high risk of water ingress due to the region’s annual rainfall and the persistent moisture in the site’s soil.

"We needed a waterproofing system capable of handling constant wet conditions,” says Eric Repetto, Fosroc’s Queensland Specification Manager.

THE SOLUTION

Fosroc specified a comprehensive waterproofing system, following the application of Primer 24 to prepare the concrete and masonry substrates, featuring:

  1. Proofex Torchseal A800: A high-performance, SBS-modified bituminous torch-applied membrane.
    1. Reinforced with a high tensile polyester carrier for excellent dimensional stability
    2. High resistance to hydrostatic pressure
    3. Heat-welded overlaps create a fully bonded, seamless barrier
    4. Suitable for below-ground walls and slabs
    5. Service temperature range: -15°C to +100°C
  2. Proofex Sheetdrain 81: A cuspated high-density polyethylene drainage sheet bonded to a non-woven geotextile filter fabric.
    1. Facilitates controlled water movement away from waterproofed structures
    2. High compressive strength to withstand backfill loads
    3. Acts as a protection layer to prevent damage to the membrane
    4. Reduces hydrostatic pressure against retaining walls
  3. Proofex Protection Board PP: A rigid polypropylene protection layer.
    1. Lightweight and easy to handle
    2. Protects the membrane during backfilling
    3. Chemically inert and resistant to water, alkalis, and chemicals in soils

The Benefits

Fosroc’s waterproofing system provided the environment-specific protection for Hillcrest Christian College’s sub-structure including:

  • A proven waterproofing barrier for sub-grade applications
  • Ability to withstand hydrostatic pressures in high-moisture environments
  • A robust protection against mechanical damage during backfilling
  • Reduces water pressure on structural walls
  • Long-term durability and low maintenance
  • Ongoing support by Fosroc’s technical team

Confirming the exceptional outcome achieved, Eric says: “Torchseal A800 gave the team confidence in achieving a durable, watertight solution, even in extreme Queensland conditions.”
