THE PROJECT

An 18-month redevelopment of a long-vacant waterside building to transform it into a vibrant brewery, bar and restaurant, required a durable flooring solution that could withstand for constant foot traffic, furniture movement, commercial cleaning and daily brewery operations.

The existing floor also presented challenges, including multiple substrate types, uneven floor levels and ageing coatings that needed careful technical assessment before installation could begin. The owners also wanted a bright coloured floor to match the theme of the brewery. After consultation with the Fosroc ANZ WA team, Nitoflor® FC150 HP-SL in Fern Green was selected.

Meeting the demands of a busy hospitality venue

The Phat Brew Club brewery at Hillarys Boat Harbour required a highly durable floor coating that could achieve a seamless, high-gloss finish – one that would be capable of resisting marks, stains and scratches from constant foot traffic, furniture movement, commercial cleaning and all the other daily demands of a working brewery environment.

The existing floor presented several challenges, including multiple substrate types, varying floor levels and ageing coatings that required careful assessment before installation could begin.

"The owners wanted a bright coloured floor to match the theme of the brewery, but it also needed to be fit for purpose," said Fosroc ANZ Account Manager, Nakita Tuffin.

"It needed to withstand heavy foot traffic while being easy to clean, and there was one section of the floor where the substrate required technical assessment before installation could proceed."

To ensure the substrate was suitable, Fosroc ANZ Technical Support Specialist, Wade McCann, met onsite with the owner, designer and applicator during the early stages of the project.

"I visited the site prior to application to assess the existing substrate and provide technical advice to ensure it would provide a sound foundation for the flooring system," Wade said.

Why Nitoflor FC150 HP-SL?

Nitoflor FC150 HP-SL in Fern Green was specified for its exceptional durability and high gloss finish. While this product is more commonly used in industrial and mining environments, this project showcased its ability to deliver a solution combining the required endurance with an outstanding decorative finish that would complement the venue's distinctive industrial-style branding.

This high-build, self-smoothing epoxy flooring is specifically designed for commercial and industrial concrete floors requiring excellent resistance to abrasion, chemical attack and heavy pedestrian traffic.

"It's probably the first time I've seen Fern Green used in such a vibrant restaurant and brewery environment," Nakita said. "It's generally used in workshops and mining applications, so it was exciting to see it become a real design feature of the venue."

Collaboration delivers a successful outcome

Elite Epoxy Experts, long-time applicators of Fosroc flooring systems, worked closely with Fosroc ANZ throughout the project.

"The existing conditions were far from ideal," said Elite Epoxy Experts Project Manager, Glen Simpson. "After consultation with the Fosroc team, we identified the correct Nitoflor product and mapped out the pathway to ensure surface preparation was the paramount focus."

"The result was a seamless, chemical-resistant floor with an anti-slip finish that not only transformed the area but will hold up under the intended heavy traffic. It wasn't easy, but the project showcased how careful planning, technical support and adaptability make the difference between a good result and an exceptional one."

A floor built to perform

The completed floor has become a defining feature of the new Phat Brew Club venue, combining bold aesthetics with the durability required for a large-scale hospitality environment.

The project demonstrates how Nitoflor FC150 HP-SL can be successfully specified beyond traditional industrial applications, providing architects, designers and flooring contractors with a solution that delivers both visual impact and long-term performance.
