While sealants account for only a small proportion of the cost of a construction project, their performance is critical to the integrity of any structure.  Fosroc ANZ’s Technical Support Manager, Martin Venn, works with our entire team to deliver the right sealants for every job.

“Choosing the wrong sealant can seriously compromise the long-term performance of the joint,” Martin says. “Improper functioning joint work can be costly for both asset owners and the construction team. All parties owe it to themselves to use the right product for the job.”

Martin recommends considering these key factors before choosing a sealant:

  1. Joint movement – Do you need a sealant that accommodates a lot of movement or very little?
  2. Traffic – Will the joints be driven or walked on?
  3. Environmental risks – Do you need a UV and weather resistant sealant?
  4. Public access – Would a pick-resistant sealant help protect the asset?
  5. Chemical exposure – Will the joints be in spill zones in food, mining and chemical plants, or do you need a sealant for a swimming pool?
  6. Water – Do you need a sealant that complies to AS/NZS 4020 for potable water? What about biological attack from waste water?

“Answering the first three questions is essential on most construction projects. If the other questions apply, you probably need to look at a specialty sealant,” Martin says.

"For general construction facades and trafficable joints, the Nitoseal MS range is solvent free and has no isocyanates. The hybrid technology offers the best of silicones and polyurethanes combined in one product. "
